Pre-requisite: Contact staff to have Extension:Gadgets installed.

Pages required:

  • MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition
  • MediaWiki:Gadget-(gadget name) [Description file]
  • MediaWiki:Gadget-(gadget name).(gadget type) [Code file(s)]

Description Edit

Gadgets are tools that can be easily enabled for users by going to Special:Preferences -> Gadgets. These are more convinient and easier to activate/deactivate than adding CSS or JavaScript to the users personal pages.

Making a gadget Edit

Define the gadget Edit

Navigate to MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition on your local wiki.

For this example we will be creating a no image gadget.

== CSS gadgets ==
* NoImage|NoImage.css

You create a new definition using the "*" character followed by a space. Next you add the title of the description page. Say our description page is located at MediaWiki:Gadget-NoImage, we'll use NoImage for definition. Next we add a verticle pipe character "|". This seperates the pages in your definition. You need to add this between all pages in your gadget definition. Next up we define the CSS code page located at MediaWiki:Gadget-NoImage.css. You need to define JavaScript pages in the same manner.

Notes Edit

  • Always strip the "MediaWiki:Gadget-" part when defining both description and code files.
  • Do not add a space before or after the pipe character.

Adding a description Edit

Navigate to MediaWiki:Gadget-NoImage on your local wiki.

Here you will define a gadget title and description.

No Images - Shows content without images.

This is pretty obvious. Title - description.

Adding code Edit

Navigate to MediaWiki:Gadget-NoImage.css on your local wiki.

Add the gadget code.

  * No Images
  * description:
  * Stop images from appearing on articles.
.WikiaPage img {
    display: none;

You have now created a working gadget. Head over to Special:Preferences to try it out.
